The clock is ticking; soon Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Campus programme will be held in South Africa for the first time. The purpose of Tennessee Campus is to provide South African bartenders the opportunity to grow their careers and define their craft with the support of local and global mentors at three Tennessee Campus events taking place in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Who are the mentors and what will they discuss?

Chris Fletcher: Quality and Consistency, USA

Chris Fletcher is the Assistant Master Distiller at Jack Daniel Distillery, grandson of late Frank Bobo and a native of Lynchburg, Tennessee. Flether’s role as Assistant Master Distiller allows him to utilise his sensory skills and extensive knowledge of the whisky making process while providing support for Master Distiller, Jeff Arnett. He also plays a key role in any potential new offerings that the distillery may consider in the future.

Nidal Ramini: The Business of Bars, UK

With over 20 years’ experience in the premium trade in the UK, Nidal is one of the industry’s leading experts. He has an operational background including seven years as co-owner of multi-award winning bars, Dusk and Montgomery Place, where he helped develop some of the country’s best bartenders, including Agostino Perrone and Marian Bekke, both from London.

Kurt Schlechter: Creativity in Drinks, RSA

Voted as one of the world’s top 100 influential people in the industry by Drinks International magazine in 2019, Kurt is an award-winning bartender and drinks consultant. Fiercely passionate about great service, spirits and cocktails, Kurt has spent the last five years training bartenders in Africa with Bar Stars the programme he developed. He’s also currently the owner of Cause | Effect, an experiential cocktail kitchen in Cape Town that was voted the best cocktail bar in South Africa in 2019 and top 100 in the world’s best 500 bars.
